History
Founded in 1999
Bodega Benegas occupies an 1901 adobe building raised by former Mendoza governor Agustín Álvarez and bought in 1999 by Federico Benegas Lynch, great-grandson of Don Tiburcio Benegas, founder of El Trapiche and a pioneer of Argentine viticulture. A five-year restoration kept the adobe walls and some 80 concrete vats. The winery sits on Aráoz 1600 (Provincial Route 60), about 30-40 minutes from Mendoza City, beside Finca Libertad in Cruz de Piedra, where Cabernet Franc planted in 1899 and Cabernet Sauvignon from 1935 still bear fruit. Visits are boutique in scale: a guided walk through the historic cellar followed by a seated tasting inside stone-walled naves, at fixed 9:30, 11:30 and 15:30 starts, in Spanish, English and Portuguese, always by prior reservation.
