History

Founded in 1885

Bodega La Rural was founded in 1885 by Felipe Rutini, an Italian immigrant from Ascoli Piceno, in Coquimbito, Maipú, Mendoza's first winegrowing district. The family planted vineyards in the Uco Valley in 1924, and in the 1990s the nineteenth-century cellar was rebuilt around modern winemaking technology. The visit, branded Bodega Histórica, is a self-guided walk through its heritage gallery, which gathers wine-industry objects from the sixteenth century onward: machines, carriages, presses, coopering tools and colonial clay vessels. It ends with a tasting beneath the huge old oak vats. Three experiences are offered, ranging from a glass of Bodega Histórica Malbec to a guided five-varietal Rutini tasting or a Single Vineyard bottle to take home. The winery's labels include San Felipe, with its caramagnola bottle used since 1934, plus Cepa Tradicional and Cruz Alta.
