History

Founded in 1999

Bodegas Caro is the winemaking alliance between the Catena family, pioneers of high-altitude Argentine Malbec, and Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), owners of Château Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux. Founded in 1999 with a first vintage in 2000, the name CARO blends CAtena and ROthschild. The winery operates out of a restored 1884 heritage cellar in Godoy Cruz, minutes from downtown Mendoza. It produces Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon blends under the CARO, Petit CARO, Amancaya and Aruma labels. Guided visits run Monday to Friday by mandatory reservation, covering the history of both families, the cellar, and an augmented-reality experience, with a tasting of three wines included. The estate is now led by Laura Catena and Saskia de Rothschild.
