History

Founded in 2001

Kaiken sits in Vistalba, Luján de Cuyo, about 1,050 metres above sea level, in a building raised in 1920 and surrounded by century-old vineyards planted in 1910. It was founded in 2001 by Chilean winemaker Aurelio Montes, of the Viña Montes family, and takes its name from the caiquén, the Patagonian goose that crosses the Andes between Chile and Argentina. The range covers Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, from the Estate and Terroir Series lines up to Ultra, Aventura and the icons Mai and Boulder. Every visit walks the vineyards, the production hall and the Cava del Ángel before a seated tasting. The winery opens Wednesday to Monday and closes on Tuesdays; its open-air restaurant, Ramos Generales, is run by chef Francis Mallmann. Booking ahead is required.
